The Modern Goddess
The concept of The Goddess ~ ie, a strong & divine feminine force ~ goes back to the very earliest days of human history. In ancient cultures the Goddess was worshipped in large part for her fertility (her direct relationship to sex / creation), whereas the Modern Goddess of our time is "worshipped" because she is sexy, but essentially not fertile. The difference in these two ways of seeing the "divine" feminine is profound.
Marilyn Monroe, for example, was often described as a "Film Goddess" in large part because of her smoldering sexuality, which is to say, men found her desirable and arousing. But while her famous nude Playboy photo spread from December 1953 was a milestone in the presentation of a glamorous woman via the mass media, it certainly did not reassure people that they would be bountiful in their crops or inspire them to have more children. Marilyn was thus a "Goddess" that personified the sexual force without the aspect of procreation, whereas historically the ability to grant fertility to individuals or to entire communities was in fact a fundamental power that the Goddesses of old were believed to have possessed. For example, the ancient Greek Goddess Aphrodite (Roman name "Venus") ~ the above/right image ~ was the Goddess of love, beauty and fertility.
While the role of the Goddess within a culture has changed throughout the centuries, many of the physical characteristics that ancient people incorporated into the images of their Goddesses can still be found in today's photos of the Modern Goddess. Compare for example these two images:

As you can see, the similarities are striking in each of these beautiful women, in particular the narrow waists and large bare breasts, though the Cretian Goddess is from 4000 years ago!
In addition to Marilyn Monroe, other famous Hollywood Goddesses of the 20th century would certainly include (among others) Ava Gardner, Rita Hayworth, Elizabeth Taylor, Sophia Loren, Brigitte Bardot, Catherine Deneuve, and Raquel Welch; early contenders for Goddess-hood in the 21st century include stars such as Beyonce Knowles, Scarlett Johanssen, Angelina Jolie, and Halle Berry. It remains to be seen whether the role of the Goddess will continue as it did in the late 20th century, or transform yet again into something entirely new.

"The Goddess of Old Europe and Ancient Crete represented the unity of life in nature, delight in the diversity of form, the powers of birth, death and regeneration." ~ Carol P. Christ
"Marilyn is a kind of ultimate. She is uniquely feminine. Everything she does
is different, strange, and exciting, from the way she talks to the way she uses
that magnificent torso. She makes a man proud to be a man." ~ Clark Gable
